First Coast YMCA’s annual event helps kids stay active and keep learning all summer long
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – April 21, 2016 – The YMCA of Florida’s First Coast will celebrate Healthy Kids Day® presented by JAXSPORTS Charities on Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Brooks Family YMCA located on Southside. The free community event will inspire kids to keep their minds and bodies active while providing them with activities and resources to achieve their potential all year long.
“A child’s development is never on vacation, and Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity to educate families and motivate kids to stay active in mind, body and spirit all summer long,” said Eric Mann, president and CEO of YMCA of Florida’s First Coast. “The Y believes in the potential of all children, and community partners like JAXSPORTS Charities are instrumental in the successful outreach and impact of our youth programs.”
YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, celebrated at more than 1300 Ys across the country by over 1.2 million participants, works to promote healthy habits at home and serves as a powerful reminder not to let children idle away their summer days. Instead, the Y hopes to focus on wowing them with their potential and make this their best summer ever by staying active and learning.
“It is within our core values to support youth development and enhancement throughout the First Coast by focusing on education, health and wellness with positive experiences,” said Rick Catlett, president and CEO of Jacksonville Sports Council. “We are proud to take part in the Healthy Kids Day once again as it continues to encourage outdoor play and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity for local kids.”
This year’s Healthy Kids Day will feature games, booths, a farm-to-city barnyard, food trucks, giveaways and more activities including:
- Free swim testing sign-ups
- Human hamster ball
- Passport prize drawing for one week of Y summer day camp, one week of swim lessons or one Y Legacy Sports program
- Meeting the Jacksonville Jaguars JaxPack
In conjunction with Healthy Kids Day and the Y’s mission to build a healthier community, the rescheduled opening ceremony of First Coast Games—a corporate health and wellness challenge—will also take place at Brooks Family YMCA on April 30, from 9 a.m. to noon. Nearly 2600 employees from 32 local companies are ready to compete with one another in this year’s event.
