Healthy Aging – Ages 50 & Better

At the Y, members experience a strong sense of belonging through a network of friends, and discover purpose through group exercise classes, educational series and cause driven volunteer programs.

Social activities and exercise are both important components for active older adults because they help with loneliness and preventing feelings of isolation. Organized social classes and groups also provide a sense of purpose and give older adults something to look forward to regularly. Across our branches, you will find a wide variety of offerings specifically for active older adults.

Read on for more information on what you can find across the First Coast at your YMCA. To see what each branch is hosting this month, check out our branch InMotion newsletters for active older adults.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.

Creativity and Crafts

Let your crafty side shine by joining the Y for one of our numerous arts and crafts-based activities! Our branches host Knitting Classes, Crochet Clubs, and Painting Parties, along with different monthly opportunities to create beautiful crafts of your own – from tie-dye shirts to candles and windchimes – while socializing with your friends. We provide the supplies and direction, you provide the creativity…and go home with something you can be proud of.

Learning and Growth Opportunities

Knowledge is Power! At the Y, we plan monthly opportunities for our members to learn, discuss, and grow…all while enjoying the company of their fellow participants. Make friends as you enjoy a literary discussion with our Book Clubs, tend to your spiritual side with Bible Study, expand your language knowledge with Foreign Language Club, or learn about the world with Travel Club! Our branches are ready to answer any Y questions that you might have with Member Orientations, and you can learn about the latest technology in a Tech 101 Session. Safety Seminars provide opportunities for members to learn the latest and greatest safety measures and recommendations, often from a community-based civic partner. These are just a few of the learning opportunities available to our active older adult community each month.

Social Games and Activities

Ignite your inner child with a variety of games and activities! Across our Ys, we host several opportunities to PLAY each month, specifically for our active older adult community. Have fun calling out your favorite word – BINGO! – or join in on Mahjong, puzzles, and card games. Enjoy the calming influence of coloring, or simply have fun laughing with your friends with a matinee movie at the Y. Celebrate your fellow members with our monthly birthday parties. One of most popular events are our monthly potlucks…create your favorite dish to share with your friends while creating new friendships! Across the First Coast, there are so many opportunities for socialization and FUN!

Fitness and Physical Activity

Movement keeps the heart, mind, and body young! Beyond our regularly-schedule group exercise classes, you can find special fitness events and activities at your YMCA. Bocce Ball, Senior Chair Volleyball, and Walking Club are just a few of the specially-scheduled classes and activities the you will find that will help you stay active and in shape! For a more relaxed experience, enjoy a drumming circle or a mediation class.

Community-based Activities

Take some time outside of the Y to enjoy the Northeast Florida community…with your Y community! Our branches plan monthly off-site lunches and dinners at local restaurants, outings to the latest movies in theatres, and day trips to local spots of interest for you and your fellow members. As well, you will find opportunities to attend specially-scheduled off-site events with your Y crowd. These events give you the opportunity to grow your friendships while enjoying some time out and about!

Special Events

Throughout the months, you will see special events planned across our YMCAs, sometimes in partnership with one of our community sponsors. Holiday parties, themed celebrations, cooking demonstrations, and provider presentations are just a few of the many events that you can find at the Y.

Group Fitness Classes

Both land and water-based group exercise classes are a great way to stay active. We offer land-based classes that can be done standing or from a chair, so you can be sure to find a class for participants of all levels!
